Canada-Israel 60th Anniversary of Friendship

This year, Canada and Israel celebrate the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations and marked that with a meeting between Stephen Harper and Benjamin Netanyahu. We hope that the relationship between the two countries remains very strong, and that the countries will continue to collaborate in trade, science and culture, extending many years in the future.

To commemorate this lengthy relationship, Canada Post has released a stamp, as seen here. For more information about the stamp, click here.

Slurpees as Temptation by Moshe Parnes

My name is Moshe, and I haven't had a Slurpee in almost a year and a half. Do you know why? Not because I don't like the taste or the color of that delicious, icy beverage. Not because of the amazing energy it gives me, or because I can actually make a whole day's meal out of one... (Then come back home and eat the awesome dinner, cooked by my awesome wife). Not even because of the nutrition value. No, I haven't had a Slurpee because there are none where I come from.

Sure, my home country's got its personality and an awesome vibe in so many ways... but let's face it - Israel is small, and very tough. Many of you don't move there for exactly the same reasons. So you are here in North America. The place to be free. But hey, you know what? As much as it costs to live here, it's easier compared to the way it is for the people who live in Israel. They have what it takes to make it in the local economy, but as we all know the Israeli market is very small, and mostly insular. That's what makes it so difficult for the lower and middle classes to make a living on their own terms.

Health Tips from the Prosserman JCC

The Prosserman JCC is the brand new JCC in mid-town Toronto. They have amazing facilities, including a fitness centre, a culinary arts studio, a new media studio and much more. The Prosserman JCC wants to help make Toronto Jews healthier and have provided us with a great article for your health:

Muscle Move of the Month.

Begin by setting your body in a prone plank position on a stability ball. Basically you'll be performing a plank...on a stability ball. Remember, feet shoulder width apart, knees extended but not locked out, hips in a neutral position, scapula (shoulder blades) in a neutral position, as well and on your elbows which would be at a 90 degree angle and directly under your deltoids. Now comes the fun part! Keeping your body in a neutral position and trying to prevent too much rotation in the upper body, as you breathe out push up from your right elbow to your right hand. Now repeat the same for the left side. Then perform the exercise in reverse. Begin by lowering from your right hand back to your right elbow and then again at the left. (This would be one repetition) Remember never lock out joints and this should be performed in a slow and controlled fashion.

SETS: Perform 3 sets of 10 reps to begin with and a 60 second rest in between sets. (Please note, if you can not perform 10 repetitions then just simply perform what you can. Remember its Quality, not Quantity. Work your way to 10 reps.

PROGRESSION: Once you have mastered this version and would like to step it up...perform the movement on one foot. Your next progression would be instability at the feet. Finding this to challenging to begin with. Start on a BOSU ball. Still to challenging...begin on the ground. Remember, everyone has to begin somewhere.
